The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center is the fourth largest employer in the county (2025). It serves as a cornerstone of care with over 900 care providers serving local residents (2025). Charles County has an interconnected healthcare network that provides access to care, talent, and training across the region. The hospital’s affiliation with the University of Maryland strengthens this system by supporting talent attraction and expanding regional reach. This network includes physician offices, outpatient care facilities, medical and diagnostic laboratories, home health care, and nursing and residential care facilities. This asset contributes to a comprehensive continuum of care.

Workforce development further reinforces the ecosystem through the College of Southern Maryland’s School of Health Sciences, which offers programs in nursing, EMS, medical laboratory technology, medical assisting, pharmacy technician, physical therapist assistant, radiography, respiratory therapy, and more. The Regional Hughesville Campus adds specialized labs and simulation centers, providing the hands-on training infrastructure healthcare employers depend on for hiring and retention.
