Charles County is also home to the Mallows Bay–Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, the 14th national marine sanctuary in the United States. Designated to protect the remains of more than 100 abandoned steamships and vessels built during World War I, this remarkable site offers a unique glimpse into the nation’s maritime history.
