Due to inclement weather, Charles County Commissioners held their meeting in a virtual capacity on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Commissioners discussed approval items and their first review of the 2026 Maryland General Assembly session. Danielle Mitchell, Acting Deputy County Administrator, briefed commissioners on locally submitted bills and statewide bills of interest for the 90-day session. Commissioners will receive weekly updates during the 90-day session. The review also included an outlook on the Fiscal Year 2027 State Budget. Commissioners also reached consensus to send a letter of support for Senate Bill 288.
Approval Items
Commissioners approved:
- A budget transfer request of $85,000 for additional funds for water repairs performed by line maintenance.
- A budget transfer request of $141,860 for the county’s share of costs shifted from the state for eligible children enrolled in private kindergarten.
- A budget transfer request of $1,640,000 to create a new Capital Improvement Project to repair the Lackey High School pool’s HVAC system.
- An FY 2026 inter-category budget transfer by the Charles County Board of Education. Highlights include a temporary increase of $4.2 million for special education funding.
- A letter to Charles County Public Schools requesting that the system remove the La Plata High School indoor pool facility from the system’s Fiscal Year 2027-2031 Capital Improvement Program.
- A change order of $244,147.25 to facilitate continued engineering support for the Mattawoman Wastewater Treatment plant Electrical and Automation Improvement Project.
- A memorandum of understanding between the county and the Town of La Plata for a side path extension along Radio Station Road.
- A resolution to condemn a property on Marshall Corner Road for a boundary line adjustment. The county worked to compensate the owner prior to initiating the condemnation process.
